all the neighbours came and when there was a break they took to the instruments.
this is the tourism office on the main street. it used to be where the slaves were held. i really liked the light in this photo. Manfred is slightly silhouetted and Elizabeth's pink trousers contrast the darkness wonderfully.
sound check.
Jacobus Cloete and Manfred Zylla
Elizabeth Cleote (Jacobus's sister)
Neighbourhood kids. They had never seen a Beetle before and thought it looked like a yellow tortoise.
really enjoyed the insight into that family and small community in vanrhynsdorp. very interesting that they still into that traditional style of music. makes me happy to see brown people holding onto their heritage, especially musically. beautiful pics lady. keep at it, whatever it is that you do. it is good to focus on thing at a time, but its awesome to have so many interests and stay creative in so many ways. you have inspired me. thank you!!
it was a great expirence and i think its important to record such events as they are a part of our history- musically and linguistically.
It took me a while (5 years) to realise that I dont have to focus on just one thing, I went from one aspect of the arts to another and recently came to the conclusion that there is a way to bring them together and I think my future projects will be informed by that. Everything you learn comes in handy some day. x
